Who Runs Your Life?

As teenagers, you might be at a point where you are want to be independent, especially from your parents. You want to do things your way, on your own time and with the people you want, but who is really running your life? There are so many things out there that might be trying to run it for you: friends, t.v., music, drugs and alcohol, boyfriends, girlfriends. Are you letting them? What are some of the things they say to try and influence you in a negative way? Maybe it sounds like this…

Friends: “It’s not a big deal, just do it, it’s fun.”
Media (t.v., music, movies) “All that matters is tonight, you only get one life.”
Drugs and Alcohol: “You need to relieve some stress, one time won’t hurt.”
Boyfriend or Girlfriend: “If we love each other, that’s all that matters.”

Sound familiar? Maybe there are people like that in your life, and you know who they are.

Next time you hear something like this, remember, someone or something else is trying to control your actions which means you have a choice to make. Those same people are not the people who have to live with the decisions you make. You are. And those same things or people probably won’t be hanging around to help you out once things get hard.

The flip side of that is that you probably know the other people or things who will influence you in a positive way. Hang out with those people instead. Surround yourself with positive and your life will be positive.
