With Memorial Day weekend coming up this weekend, people everywhere are getting ready for summer! We are breaking out the shorts and flip flops, waiting for pools to open and getting out of school. Along with these summer traditions is the start of the summer movie season with Memorial Day weekend being one of the biggest $ makers. One weekend opening, "The Hangover 2" is expected to do well at the box office based on the success of the first movie. Many of you have seen the first one and are familiar with one of the movie's stars Zach Galifianakis. Interestingly enough, here is what Zach had to say about his movie...
"When kids come up to him and say how much they love The Hangover, he yells at their parents for letting them see it. In fact, he's not sure how he feels about adults' seeing the movie. After his mother watched the first Hangover, she voiced objections to the crass humor. 'I had to get on the phone with my mom and say, "I agree with you,"' he says. (Interview with Time Magazines Joel Steen)
It's interesting that even Zach thinks this movie is probably inappropriate not only for young people, but for adults as well. Then why does he make them? Because it sells! Zach goes on to say,
"'But at some point, as it did well at the box office, all that embarrassment flew out the window." - Zach G.
Did you catch that? He said "it did well at the box office." This means $ and lots of it. One thing we have definitely talked about in the classroom is that sex (and alcohol) sells. Even though Hollywood is putting out movies that are full of sex, alcohol, drugs and violence, hopefully, we won't let them influence our own lives. Remember that the media can be a powerful influence if we let it. The media can make us think that these things are funny, not that big of a deal, normal and that "everyone is doing it."
However, our motto at ReL8 is that we can live right at any cost, be who we are in today’s world and give nothing less than our best. Hopefully, those things mean more to you than $ means to Hollywood.
