You have probably heard about STDs, but what exactly are they and how can you avoid contracting them? Many students have the attitude, "it's never going to happen to me," when, in fact, STDs affect MILLIONS of teens each year.
- STD - sexually transmitted disease, any disease transmitted by sexual contact. (In MedicineNet.com)
- "Each year, there are approximately 19 million new STD infections, and almost half of them are among youth aged 15 to 24." (Sexually transmitted diseases among American youth: Incidence and prevalence estimates, 2000)
There are more than 25 different types of STDs falling under two main categories, bacterial (non-viral) and viral. Though most STDs can be treated, some cannot be cured.
- Bacterial (non-viral) - Infection caused by a bacteria, usually can be cured with antibiotics. (The Patient Education Institute, Inc.)
- Viral - Infection caused by a virus, usually can be treated but some cannot be cured. (The Patient Education Institute, Inc.)
Many STDs are asymptomatic, which means they can be present in a person's body, yet show no symptoms. Asymptomatic or not, any STD can still be passed from one person to another.
Examples of bacterial (non-viral) STDs:
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Syphilis
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Examples of viral STDs:
"Abstinence from vaginal, anal and oral intercourse is the only 100% effective way to prevent HIV, other STDs and pregnancy. No protective method is 100% effective and condom use cannot guarantee absolute protection against any STD or pregnancy." - (US Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
Having correct information is key when it comes to STDs. You can't make the best decisions for your life without the facts. Abstinence until marriage to a faithful, uninfected partner will guarantee you will NOT have to suffer the consequences of contracting an STD.
