Self-Esteem

Having low self-esteem is more than simply feeling bad about yourself. If these feelings continue, it can result in dangerous lifestyle choices such as sexual activity outside of marriage. However, teens who strive to be sexually abstinent are more likely to have a strong, healthy self-esteem.

Self-image - How you view or describe yourself. Self-image can be affected by:

  • How you view yourself physically
  • How you feel about your personality
  • How you believe others see you

Self-esteem - A confidence and satisfaction in oneself. Self-esteem can be affected by:

  • teasing/bullying
  • weight
  • looks
  • talent
  • athletic ability
  • intelligence
  • sexual activity

Many times people compare themselves to others. They compare their weaknesses to other people's strengths and forget about their own strengths. By recognizing and focusing on your strengths, you can improve your self-esteem.

Having a high self-esteem can help you make healthier choices, such as abstaining from sex, drugs and alcohol. The words and action other other people can affect your self-esteem, so be sure to surround yourself with people who are encouraging. Remember you are special, unique and the approval of others is not what really matters. Be confident in yourself and your decision to abstain from sexual activity!
