“The charge that there is no evidence supporting the effectiveness of abstinence programs is not true” says Christine Kim of The Heritage Foundation. In fact, abstinence education has been shown to reduce sexual activity. There have been numerous studies on abstinence only education and the facts are that it works! There are more studies that show positive results for abstinence education than negative ones.

In recent years it has been shown that live birth rates have been lowered, and those statistics can be linked to abstinence programs in Arizona. This study also shows that their abstinence program positively affected sex before marriage.

Research shows that a 67% decline in pregnancy is due to a reduction in sexually active girls, not the increased use in contraception. Also cited was that there was a 51% drop in birth rates due to abstinence. This link is filled with great statistics. They go on to say that there was a significant decrease in the number of males that are currently sexually active.

More studies are showing that abstinence education is effective! These are all evaluations that have been published in peer reviewed journals. In one study from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, women who take a pledge to remain virgins are 40% less likely to have a child out-of-wedlock.

“Since 1991, when federal abstinence funding began, there has been a 43% decrease in teen births to 15-17 year olds, despite a 25% increase in that age population.” There is also an added benefit of abstinence education to taxpayers. It is reported that 6.9 billion dollars is saved due to abstinence education.

Sixteen out of Twenty-One studies shows positive results from abstinence education. That means that more often than not abstinence education is shown to improve the lives of teens. It has actually been shown that teens that have abstinence education on average have higher academic achievements and report better psychological well-being.

Abstinence education not only cuts in half the rates of teen sexual activity, but it also helps in reducing the number of partners a teen who is already sexually active has.

This study shows three different abstinence only education curriculum, and how all of them are effective. All of these studies showed that the initiation of sex by teenagers was considerably lowered by the abstinence programs. Not only that but, a well designed abstinence education program can reduce teen sexual activity for as long as two years or more.

Abstinence education is what parents want their children to be taught, and it’s proven to be effective.  Even though the media tends to cast abstinence education in a negative way, there are at least 15 scientific evaluations that show these programs are effective.

Since implementing abstinence education the teen pregnancy rate in Georgia has dropped 46 percent.  There are more studies like this available to prove the effectiveness of abstinence education.
